Buying the Right Box Truck

1. What is a Box Truck?

First off, it’s important to understand exactly what a box truck is. By definition, a box truck has a cab and separate cargo area, usually in the shape of a square or rectangle. The two-piece construction of these vehicles differentiates them from other truck types and makes them fall into the medium-duty truck category. 

2. Determine Size

Although box trucks fall into the medium-duty truck category, there are different sizes you can select from. It’s helpful to have an idea of how you’ll need to use the vehicle and what types of cargo you’ll need to transport. You don’t want to invest in something that will be too large or be unable to hold the total amount of cargo you need. 

In regard to size, you also need to think about the weight, height and length of the truck. You should consider the area you’ll be operating in and evaluate any common obstacles you might encounter, like overpasses and bridges. 

Remember that there are size and weight limits for some roads and certain parameters require a CDL for operation.

3. Flooring 

The flooring found in a box truck can actually differ, so you’ll want to make your selection based on the type of things you’ll haul. If you anticipate moving products that may leak or weigh a lot, you might want a material like aluminum that can be washed and can handle heavier cargo. Otherwise, hardwood flooring can be a popular option. 

4. Door Type

Another big factor is the cargo door. You may not think much of it at first, but the type of door you choose can change the overall experience you have as a box truck owner. If you think you’ll often make deliveries to a warehouse with a dock, for example, a roll-up door might work the best. Swing-out doors may be the better choice for scenarios where you might be unloading or loading cargo on the street. 

Making this decision now will improve the longevity of your purchase.

5. Tie Downs

Whenever hauling cargo is involved, it’s important to think about how the cargo will be secured. Many box trucks have tie-down features that can make this step of the process easier. E-tracks are a popular choice, but you can select from different row amounts.
