About Credit Applications
A Credit Application is a questionnaire that a lender or business will require you to complete before lending you money or extending credit. The information you supply on a credit application helps the lender determine whether to lend you money and how much, assess your ability to repay, and offer the best terms possible for your loan. These applications will vary, but the basic information required is explained below. As always, whenever entering into any agreement, be sure to take the time to read and understand the agreement. Before entering into any agreement you do not completely understand, seek the advice of a financial or legal professional.
Generally, the first part of a credit application will ask you to provide basic identifying information about you and/or your company. This information will include such items as name, address, and phone number. This section will also typically ask for your social security number if you're applying as an individual, as well as both your SSN and the employer identification number or EIN of the business if you're applying for a business loan. The application will usually request the amount of the loan you are seeking and the purpose of the loan (equipment make, model, VIN, condition, etc.).
The financial information section will ask you about your income and financial background. As an individual, you will be asked about your salary or annual earnings, assets, home ownership status, other outstanding debt obligations, and banking information. If you are applying for credit as a business, you will be asked about your annual sales and net income in addition to the items above. The application may also request that you submit a copy of recent tax returns or audited financial statements with the application.
A work history section may also be included. Typically, an application will ask for a five—to ten-year work history. The lender may ask for contact information for past employers, length of employment, and salary history.
The references section will ask you to list individuals or businesses with which you have worked and paid for services. The creditor will ask for contact information for these references, including phone numbers and email addresses, as well as details about the relationship, such as the length of your relationship and payment history.
If you have a Loan Guarantor (co-signer), the lender will ask for contact information for each co-signer as well as social security numbers, driver's license numbers, work or income information, and other financial information.
The credit application will also contain the Terms and Conditions of the loan. You must agree to these when you submit your credit application. This section will include your permission to run a credit check on all loan applicants. This section may also include details of the credit approval process, details about the approval process, and specific terms of the loan. Also included may be information regarding interest rates, fees, conditions of the loan, and the lender's dispute resolution process that you are agreeing to by submitting the loan application.
