Your Used Semi Truck Buying Checklist
Whether you’re on the verge of starting your own owner-operator business or you need to add to your existing fleet, purchasing a used semi truck is a great way to expand your success. Commercial trucking continues to be an essential part of our economy, but the bottom line can also include several expensive inputs. Choosing to shop pre-owned inventory can cut your costs and help you stay on the road!
1. Consider What You Need
Not all semi trucks are used for long-haul trucking. In fact, there are endless applications for the use of semis. As you begin shopping for the right option, keep your longterm goals in mind. Do you anticipate using your truck for day jobs or multi-day deliveries? Your answer to these questions can influence your final decision!
The use you intend for your truck will determine what type of drivetrain, weight capacity, fuel economy, and cab type you’ll need to invest in. For example, drivers who do several cross-country trips will likely want a sleeper truck.
2. Evaluate Age, Mileage, and Condition
Once you’ve determined the features you need to have for the most comfort and efficiency, you should begin evaluating the model year and mileage of the inventory you’re interested in. Diesel engines can typically handle higher mileage, but the number can also indicate the overall condition of the vehicle.
Don’t underestimate your first impression! The gut feeling you have when you first take a look at the truck in question should absolutely be considered as you debate the purchase.
It can be easy to say newer models are the better option, but many older model years are well-maintained and can be a great addition to your operation.
3. Gather Information
Along with determining the mileage and age of the truck, you should gather additional information about ownership and maintenance history to develop the whole picture of its condition.
There should be well-kept records of all maintenance and repairs that have been completed. It’s also helpful to have a general idea of where the truck was primarily located. Ask the seller for as much information as you can gather.
4. Determine Warranty Availability
Getting a warranty on a pre-owned model isn’t always guaranteed, but depending on the model year and who you’re buying from, you may be able to add-on a warranty agreement. It’s worth taking the time to inquire about manufacturer’s warranties and dealership options.
Warranties can be a lifesaver in the event of unexpected breakdowns or damage. The upkeep of a semi truck isn’t always affordable, so having a buffer with a warranty can definitely make your purchase a better deal.
