Having the right truck to move cargo can make your workload a lot more manageable. A popular choice to complete the job are medium duty trucks, or vehicles that fall within Classes 4, 5, and 6. Our team at GATR Truck Center carries a great selection of inventory and we’re excited to share some of the most popular uses for medium duty trucks! You just might decide they’re the perfect option for you.

1. Towing

Many pickup trucks actually fall into the medium duty category. Therefore, they’re commonly used to tow trailers and move cargo! Things like utility trailers, livestock trailers, and travel trailers can typically be towed by a medium duty truck. Just make sure to double-check the towing capacity.

In fact, some medium duty trucks are actually designed to solely be tow trucks like you’d see rescuing other vehicles on the side of the road. This includes flatbed tow truck models as well.

2. Cement

Many cement trucks actually fall into the Class 6 category, making them a medium duty truck. Professionals often utilize these vehicles for construction sites and residential projects. Next time you see a cement truck traveling down the road, you’ll know it’s a medium duty vehicle.

3. Dumping

Another truck category you may not expect to be medium duty is dump trucks. Not all models will automatically be considered Class 6 because it’s dependent on their size or gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), but many do fall within the specified weight range. Most dump trucks do require a CDL to operate.

4. Service

Many utility trucks are also considered medium duty. Industries like agriculture, railroad, and construction will utilize these trucks for daily tasks. For example, a diesel mechanic might use a medium duty truck as their primary work vehicle.

5. Building

It’s also very common to find several medium duty trucks at a construction site. Whether it’s a new home build or a commercial building, these vehicles can carry all the necessary equipment and tools needed at the work site.

6. Ice Cream

Yes, that’s right! Your favorite ice cream trucks are often considered medium duty vehicles, too. They have the added bonus of being built with a refrigeration system, but they’re still within either Class 4, 5 or 6. So, if you’re thinking about starting a new business, maybe this is your sign to have your own ice cream truck.
