What Makes a Light Duty Truck?

1. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)

The factor that classifies a vehicle as a light duty truck the most is its weight. If it is under 8,500 pounds, it’s a light duty truck! This includes some pickup trucks, passenger vans, and delivery vehicles. 

There are three classes of truck that fit into the light duty category: Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. This means that some pickup truck models are actually considered medium-duty or are divided into a category called light heavy-duty.

2. Payload Capacity

Another determining factor is the payload capacity, which is the maximum amount of weight a vehicle can safely carry. In the United States, a truck can only be considered light duty if the payload capacity is less than 4,000 pounds.

The payload capacity is calculated using the GVW and the curb weight, which is the total weight of the vehicle with a full tank of fuel but without any passengers or cargo.

3. Different From Commercial Classes

Although light duty trucks have their own classification, they are not usually considered commercial vehicles. However, if it’s being used for business purposes, you could say it is a commercial truck! 

Keep in mind that these vehicles do not require a CDL to operate, only a valid driver’s license.

4. EPA Definitions

Light duty trucks can also be defined by their emissions. They fall into a regulatory classification when they fall under the 8,500 pound mark. The EPA’s MOVES program utilizes the Federal Highway Administration definition to contribute to their own, stating that light duty vehicles will not have more than more than two axles or six tires. The category further broken down into cars vs. trucks, which can sometimes be difficult to determine. 

5. Uses

Light duty trucks can be used in a variety of settings. They might be a daily commuter vehicle or a work truck, for example. They’re great for moving single appliances, furniture, materials, and supplies! A lot of times people just genuinely enjoy driving them, too.
